Mt Vernon BWC members had so much fun last night helping the kids decorate cookies after the Christmas Parade!! Thank you IGA for your cookie donation and to all the members that helped whether by donating sprinkles and supplies or by actually helping in the tent. You are a great group of ladies!
The Mt. Vernon business Women’s Club is going to be at the Mt. Vernon Market days event on July 1st 2017 at the old Armory. We will be selling fidget spinners in 6 different colors, rechargeable light up dog collars, RADA knives, and Certified eclipse glasses. We would love to see you Saturday and if you have any questions about who we are or what we do please feel free to ask one of the ladies at the booth and we would be happy to talk to you about it. The Market Days event will be open from 8 AM to 2 PM.
The Mt. Vernon Business Women’s Club finished up their year with some exciting accomplishments. Mt. Vernon was proud to have three members attend the State Convention in Champaign, Illinois, May 5-7th. Crystal Rios was awarded the Speak-Off winner with her speech on “Why Women Should be Involved in Politics”. The judges had very nice remarks regarding Crystal and her presentation. Judge Jo Beth Weber, sponsored by the Mt. Vernon Local, was one of the two winners in the Outstanding Working Women of Illinois competition. This is the Illinois Federation’s most prestigious award. Jo Beth was also the keynote speaker in the Post-Convention Meeting on Sunday morning. Mt. Vernon’s Immediate Past President, Carol Burk gave a presentation to the convention on “You Can be Superwoman” which seemed to be enjoyed and participated in by those attending. On Saturday night, Carol was sworn in as President-Elect for the Illinois Federation for the year 2017-18. Amanda Burk has assumed the role of Networking Chair for that year. What fun we had and what a busy year we have ahead.
On Monday, May 8th the Mt. Vernon Local held it regular monthly meeting with all business being suspended until June in order for accommodate the presentation of our three (3) $1,000 scholarships for 2017. The Dora E. Brydon Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Jasie Kitowski of Waltonville High School, the Wilma K. Harpole Business Scholarship was given to Jaxon Helm of Webber Township High School in Bluford and Adrienne Lyday was presented with the Ellen Ashton New Opportunity Scholarship for those who are wishing to return to college after being out of school for a period of time.
During this same meeting, Dorothy Hamson, our Installation Chair presented the ceremony to install Mt. Vernon LO’s 2017-18 officers based on our new president’s motto of “Expanding Our Horizons by Making New Connections. The 2017-18 officers are as follows: President – Amanda Burk, President-Elect – Patsy Timm, Treasurer – Crystal Rios, Recording Secretary – Marsha Webb, Corresponding Secretary – Eileen Williams, and Members-at-Large – Tana Dehart, Gwen Gross and Crystal Webster.
We have many exciting programs already planned and more in the works. Please feel free to come visit our Local at any time. Our meetings are on the second Monday of each month at the Rose Lane Community Building at 4217 Rose Lane in Mt. Vernon, Illinois at 6:00 p.m. We look forward to exchanging contacts with other locals this year as we expand our horizons.
The Mt. Vernon Business Women’s club offers three scholarships every year, the Ellen Ashton scholarship is for women returning to school after entering the workforce, the Dora E. Brydon Scholarship is for students planning to obtain a degree in health related professions, and the Wilma K. Harpole Scholarship is for students planning to obtain a degree in business studies. It is once again time for the Mt. Vernon Business Women’s Club’s Candidates’ Forum. Our Forum is planned for March 7th at the Rolland W Lewis Building in Mt. Vernon City Park. The Meet and Greet will be from 5:30 to 6:30 pm with the Forum beginning promptly at 6:30. All candidates running in the April election are invited to attend the Meet and Greet. Unfortunately, do to time restraints, only those candidates running opposed for a position will be asked to participate in the Forum. Included in the Forum will be candidates opposed for positions in the Municipal Election for Mayor and City Council, Mt. Vernon Township High School Board full term positions, and those challenged for Mt. Vernon and Shiloh Township positions. We apologize that we do not have time available to include all candidates in Jefferson County.
